THURSDAY’S NEW SINGLE, “APPLICATION FOR RELEASE FROM THE DREAM” MARKS A TRIUMPHANT, INDEPENDENT RETURN TO THE SCENE
Thursday is everyone’s favorite band. If they aren’t your favorite band, they’re your favorite band’s favorite band. The profound impact they’ve left on a subculture is noteworthy enough, but the way they are continually trailblazing to this very day is even more so. Their newest single, “Application For Release From The Dream,” deserves a spot at the top of emo band comeback rankings.
Sometimes, legacy bands are rendered completely free after removing themselves from label contracts. There is something special about fueling your band’s journey solely based on community efforts. If anyone can do that well, it’s Thursday, with legions of fans gathering in their corner, likely awestruck that they are back at all.
This song is nothing short of powerful; it sounds as you would expect a Thursday song too, but with a heightened fever. The themes of this song are cyclical, dealing with deaths and rebirths. However, it feels multi-faceted, in true Thursday fashion. Upon first lesson, I assumed the song was about their journey making art under immense pressure, especially as the scene they created changed shape over two decades. They are seemingly removing themselves from narratives that don’t align with their values, only creating things because they truly want to.
Sonically, the single is a journey of its own. The guitar work is breathtaking, with crescendos adding momentum with Geoff Rickly’s iconic vocal stylings. There will always be a place for Thursday in the scene they helped build, but, if they continue along this hyper-authentic route, a full LP of songs would be gnarly—in the best way possible.
