TALLY SPEAR REMINDS EVERYONE THAT NO ONE IS OWED “PRETTY”

Women are inherently granted a set of unrealistic expectations placed upon them by society. Many have expressed concern about the overall effects this has on individuals and groups, among them British pop-punk singer Tally Spear. Her latest anthem, “Pretty,” challenges the patriarchal cycle that demands unrealistic consistency from women.

How many of us have been told to “smile more” by dudes who think that’s a compliment? It’s more than just an annoying passing line, it’s something we deal with daily. Voices like Spear allow women to feel more confident in rejecting stereotypes and unwanted advances from men who make them “want to leave this city.”

Sonically, the track is catchy and coated in pop-punk goodness. Spear’s artistic flair veers away from the Avril Lavigne sound that previously dominated the track. Of course, it’s laced with gorgeous electric guitars and big choruses. However, Spear’s voice and style separate her from what we’ve heard before within the genre.

Tally Spear is a necessary rising voice in a predominantly male pop-punk space. Globally, the genre had been rather stagnant from some time, but Spear delivers on her promise to “break the cycle.” Her single, “Pretty,” is both undeniably catchy and culturally relevant.
