SUNGAZE TURNS NOSTALGIA INTO FORWARD MOTION ON “I’M NO LONGER AFRAID OF HEIGHTS”

Caught up in the conflict of painful nostalgia, Sungaze breaks free in “I’m No Longer Afraid of Heights,” the powerful and raw title track of their upcoming album.

The feelings the track evokes are slow, melancholic nostalgia. Filled with emotions from a lost time, the band explores the growing pains of moving on through an explosive mix of shoegaze synth, heavy drums, and acoustic guitar.

There are beautiful Western influences in the track – from the twang of the swing guitar to the wispy tones of the Ivory Snow. It says true to the good-old Sungaze yearning vibe while exploring a new angle of sound.

It harnesses the cuttingly dark sounds of Ethel Cain while simultaneously keeping an edgy atmospheric tone like LSD and the Search for God.

Craving the days of candy shops and parking lots, the band tries to express that exploration is a lost art in adulthood. As we get stuck in the monotonous routine of daily life, we slowly lose the wonder we once had.

Around the 3-minute mark, it takes on a true retrospective mood, slowing the track down before exploding into a freeing ballad. The mosaic of voice represents the conflicting feelings of revisiting the past and the complications that come with it.

The “boneyards” of those who were unsuccessful in breaking out of the trap of nostalgia are stuck, as the track emotionally cries out. The song serves as a call to harness the whimsy of childhood constructively, rather than staying stuck in the past.

In “I’m No Longer Afraid of Heights,” Sungaze reminds us that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel and that we must not fret over the past. It’s a blissful look into the band’s future, one that continues on with the cutting-edge shoegaze they do so well.
