SOZI SOARS WITH HER LATEST INDIE EP ‘BLOOM’
DIY projects have transformed many times over, thanks to technological developments. Many artists can finally realize creative visions thanks to the accessibility of equipment. Indie-pop songstress SOZI is among this crowd, with her new EP ‘Bloom’ showcasing her artistic potential. ‘Bloom’ is 1 of 4 installments, each representing seasons—beginning with fresh spring blossoms. The singer celebrated her release with a whimsical event in Pasadena, giving attendees an afternoon tea experience and curated gift bags while showcasing local creatives. Despite acting as a solo effort, her community emphasis solidifies her messaging within ‘Bloom.’ The EP shines with potential from beginning to end, a testament to creative resilience.
The opening track, “Seconds,” stands tall as a lead single. It features a catchy beat, captivating nuances, and a respectable personal narrative. Lyrically, “Seconds” transcends along with its melody. The concept of time is tough to grapple with, especially in your 20s. SOZI suggests, “There’s gotta be more than this.” However, the grooving beat backing the track suggests internalized motivation. She can’t quite see the light at the end of the tunnel, but she knows it’s there. I may not be SOZI’s target audience, but I respect her dedication and carefully curated aesthetics. DIY is no joke, especially as a woman in predominantly male spaces. SOZI can flip the script; she is just as capable as her male counterparts. “Seconds” is addictive, even if it wouldn’t traditionally fit into my playlists.
‘Bloom’ only has one potential flaw: repetition. Its homogeneousness makes it difficult to decipher when songs begin and end, as they blend seamlessly. This can, ironically, become an advantage, as transitions in larger-scale music projects are admirable and often the trademark quality of the work. However, where “Fall Away” captivates with resonant lyrics and atmospheric soundscapes, it stagnates slightly. Occasionally, the atmospheric angle overpowers the emotional depth of SOZI’s lyrics, which are profound in each song's core. The song accurately articulates the forest-y aesthetic that SOZI aims for, sounding like a twinkly bed of grass among towering trees.
“Just For A Minute” showcases SOZI’s production efforts. Technological elements blend with live instruments seamlessly. The integration of bird whistles, as they’re mentioned in the lyrics, is a brilliant touch. This track is as elegant as a fantasy novel despite wavering on the slower side. SOZI has a gorgeously soulful voice, but her strengths lie within her musical instincts. She completely understands the kinds of songs that do her voice justice. However, she may fall victim to a plateau if she doesn’t get a bit more experimental. Some moments of “Just For A Minute” are predictable, contradicting its lyrical content. Of course, SOZI deserves credit where it’s due. Producing an EP entirely on her own is no small feat. Therefore, these minor setbacks won't be as noticeable as she grows and develops the ‘Seasons’ collection.
Perhaps the strongest song in the EP, “Set Me Free,” is gorgeously composed and performed. Even with digital instruments, SOZI is an emotive performer breathing life into them instead of allowing them to appear robotic. Despite its modern improvements, MIDI struggles with flatlining and lacks emotional depth. Her blending abilities are outstanding in terms of her vocal performance and MIDI mixing and mastering. This song has stunning harmonies, reminding audiences that singing voices are instruments, like guitars or drums. SOZI has masterfully articulated her creative vision, but she will appeal to a target audience—and this audience will adore her.
Conceptually, ‘Seasons’ is a stroke of genius. Its first installment is cleverly executed, showcasing that passion has far more value than any price tag on equipment at Guitar Center. SOZI relied more on her musical instincts than name brands or enlisting superstar producers. Though occasionally repetitive, the EP has tons of potential, surpassing any hurdles SOZI may have faced as a DIY act. The songs will likely translate well to live performances, with audiences of varied sizes and personalities cheering her on. Overall, ‘Bloom’ is a strong indie-pop that will hopefully eventually earn SOZI more widespread recognition.
