SONG PREMIERE: JULIA NUNES TAKES BOLD GENRE SHIFT IN “HAUNTED HOUSE”
Just in time for Halloween, singer-songwriter Julia Nunes dropped her dark, daring new single, “Haunted House.” Previously known for her stripped-down indie roots, this signals a shift in her persona, one that is here to make waves.
The song immediately shows beautiful gothic elements that highlight Julia’s pivot into a new sound. She touches on the ‘90s, with electronic sounds reminiscent of Switchblade Symphony. Julia doesn’t stray from the modern take, though, meshing in popular indie-pop that artists with her same tenor, like AURORA, flourish in.
It is hauntingly beautiful. The production is stellar, from the cautious metronome guiding the track to the distant guitar riff cutting through. The eerie melody feels like a dark art that any gothic lover will enjoy.
And the highlight of it all, of course, is Julia’s deep, hypnotizing vocals that wrap you in like a ritual. She bends and twists with the melody, feeling the emotion. It truly feels like her voice was meant for this genre.
The track takes you through the story of toxic love; wanting to be better but feeling paralyzed to stay: “I love you, but I can’t break the curse.”
“Haunted House” might be Julia Nunes’ most adventurous work so far, and we’re absolutely here for it. Look out for two additional singles planned for winter and spring ahead of Julia Nunes’ album – set for release in 2027.
