SLUMBER’S “JULIAN CASABLANCA (I WANNA ROCK A PAIR LIKE)” IS A CHEEKY INDIE SLEAZE ANTHEM THAT ROCKS
The pressure of London nightclubs and trying to fit in is what “Julian Casablanca (I Wanna Rock A Pair)” is about. The very inside joke of the single is also a playful nod to “The Strokes and their jeans.” It’s funny and ironic. The five-piece band Slumber puts the listener at the decadent, lo-fi party in question with all the “cool people” in the accompanying video, which is very much in your face as well close up and personal with all of the too hip for room scenesters. Slumber feels awkward and desperately wants to take over and steal the spotlight away from them. They go on to do just that and bowl everyone over. The lead singer of the band breaks out toward the end of the video in leather rock star garb and wears dark sunglasses. Slumber wows the crowd with a truly winning and raucous performance that blows away the most blase, uneasily impressed people who now look on in awe. They gather close and try to touch the lead singer, like the rock god of sorts he strives to be. Slumber makes their claim as a band to watch. They have a staying power, presence, and confidence once playing in action. They show a sense of humor and aplomb in this enjoyable and hilarious new track, “Julian Casablanca (I Wanna Rock A Pair).”
