Canadian rockers PUP are gearing up for the release of their forthcoming record, ‘Who Will Look After The Dogs?’ The album rollout has been met with three singles; most recently, the group collaborated with Jeff Rosenstock for a hard-hitting hit, “Get Dumber.”

“Get Dumber” opens up with ear-splitting electric guitars distorting into each ear magnificently. A distinct lead layer accompanies a rhythm guitar, a lost art in modern rock. Sonically, the single leans into traditional punk rock, with Rosenstock acting as the perfect collaborator for this moment.

Besides the undeniably badass feature, the rhythm section leads in “Get Dumber.” The drums captivate the entire way through, tightly aligning the chaotic melodies and riffs to create something cohesive. A climactic song could have easily gotten lost in the sauce, but those drums are killer, tying everything together with a shiny bow.

And holy heck—lyrically, the song is deeply resonant due to….broadly gesticulating to the state of the world.

PUP’s record is shaping up to be one of the top hits this year. Their enigmatic presence within the scene and focused punk ethos put them at the forefront of my editorial playlists.
