PUNCHY AND GRUNGY: STRANGE PINK EXPLODE IN “SCULCOATES”

Strange Pink just dropped Sculcoates, a new taste, into their upcoming EP in the fall. The three-piece works in tandem to set the scene of a burning world, but ultimately expresses their desire to fix it. 

You can immediately feel the grungy melody similar to the likes of Pavement, with longing guitar and a poking melody – even taking on a Nirvana “fuck it” persona. As each part of the song layers, you’re taken deeper into their world.

The chorus has a sick shoegaze edge, ripping through the melody and placing you in a space of contemplation. This part reminds me of the atmospheric beeps that Sonic Youth absolutely crushes.

The song’s contents are similar to the likes of  “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” – creating a spoken-word visual song that showcases the everyday chaos that goes on throughout the world.

“You could be anywhere at all”

They let you into multiple different settings, from polluted lakes to burning buildings and even corrupt politicians. It’s an ode to the difficulties of living, but also a call to action to keep going. While Sculcoates’ central theme focuses on the negativity of humans, I almost take it as a push to appreciate the world around you… and make it better.
