PILLOWPRINCE’S DREAMY SECOND SINGLE “R THE STRAIGHTS OKAY?” IS PERFECTLY DEFIANT
Don’t judge a book by its cover. Pillowprince’s second single may seem lighthearted with a title like “R The Straights Okay?” but beneath the surface, varied levels of satire carry the song's weight. It’s topical, timely, and essential for everyone—whether you are straight or LGBTQIA+.
Tragically, homophobia still runs rampant today. Many people have rejected society’s beauty standards and traditions, instead veering towards self-expression, regardless of the cost. Sadly, this cost is often judgment, even when occasionally masked as allyship. The running theme of being like everyone else cuts deeply, forcing everyone to rethink their approach to challenging topics.
Personally, I think the line “Why don’t you quit your little art thing and get a real job?” was the standout line. Sometimes, our hypocrisy goes unnoticed. Things you say to others matter, and Pillowprince’s lyrics in “R The Straights Okay?” suggest it’s time for a new approach.
Sonically, the gorgeous indie rock instrumental glides along as effortlessly dreamy lead vocals control the narrative. Light as a feather, a sweet vocal tone does not hide the sonic resonance but instead amplifies it.
Pillowprince is off to a fantastic start, with poignant lyricism paired with good-natured satire culminating into an impressive signature sound.
