MEMORIES STILL LINGER IN MIKE GOODRICK’S TRACK “SONGS I STILL SKIP”
Everybody knows the struggles of when a song becomes so intertwined with the past that you can’t even bear to listen to it post-breakup. Mike Goodrick explores this in his new track, “Songs I Still Skip,” a peppy pop-punk song that is relatable to anybody going through this dilemma.
Everything about this song is an ode to the 2000s, even in its callback to a 2009 playlist Goodrick built. The buildup is bright, filled with the picking strums and melodic vocals from Goodrick. As it gets closer to breaking down, layers come and enrich the sonic space. The chorus brings a guitar that amps up the track until it explodes into a melodic sound.
Lyrically, the track is clever. The wordplay in each element of a song, relating back to the heartbreak, is fun. Each element of a song, from the hook to the chords, is related back to heartbreak. Even a callback to Blink-182’s iconic song, “I Miss You,” is included.
“Songs I Still Skip” is a time capsule taken straight from the heyday of pop-punk. From every reference to every note, it’s clear that Mike Goodrick feels fondly for this era and yearns to bring it back.
