NORTHLANE'S ACOUSTIC EP '2D' IS A MASTERPIECE

If you’re sitting in your house depressed because you can’t go to concerts, then Northlane’s new EP 2D might be the best thing for you.

2D is Northlane’s first acoustic album and it features beautiful new renditions of their very heavy, melodic, electronic songs. While the band typically uses seven-string baritone guitars, dropped tunings, and an array of guitar pedals, 2D uses acoustic guitars with some piano and minimal electronic soundscapes. Instead of the tasty screams on Alien, Marcus Bridge’s clean vocals are exclusively used which adds to the intimate ambiance.

The lyrical content of these songs ranges from our mortality and impending deaths to Marcus Bridge’s violent upbringing with his heroin-addicted parents. The acoustic version brings out very different but wonderful moods in comparison to the original releases. Bridge had this to say about the new release:

“I wanted to strip these songs back to the bare minimum to juxtapose the soundscapes of the album, a 2D version of sorts. A song like ‘Rift’ has a completely different energy in this context and took on new meaning with the recording in the depths of lockdown, now almost feeling like a cry of frustration and despair.”

This phenomenal EP was recorded during the lockdown in Melbourne, Australia, and features the songs “Bloodline,” “Rift,” “4D,” and “Sleepless” off of their album Alien along with “Enemy Of The Night” which was released in 2020 as a single.

While Northlane’s style has shifted over the years, their 2019 release Alien was a unique blend of progressive metalcore and electronic music. If you haven’t heard that masterpiece, please check it out here.
