NOELLE SUCKS AND UNDEROATH’S SPENCER CHAMBERLAIN TEAM UP FOR RELATABLE NEW SINGLE “COPY UR KEYS”

Noelle Sucks exists in a league of her own, but you can find her most commonly at the corner of The Postal Service and Owl City. Still, there’s a heaviness in her otherwise demure demeanor; meme aside, it is clear that Noelle Sucks was able to generate a softer sound by listening to heavier music. It’s a fascinating contrast, one that is brought to life via a collaboration by scene heavy-hitter Spencer Chamberlain of Underoath fame. This collaborative effort, “Copy Ur Keys (ft. Spencer Chamberlain)” is a manifestation of artistic and genre-based growth.

“Copy Ur Keys” is a bit hyperpop and a bit heavy; I’ll always be the first to say that autotune is an artistic choice, and this song proves me right. The light use of autotune emphasizes certain lyrical points, allowing Noelle’s naturally clear tone to shine through and contrast Chamberlain’s heavy, raspy vocals.

Melodically addicting, this song describes a toxic relationship that’s ran its course. But, unlike other songs in the same vein, “Copy Ur Keys” checks the narrator’s bias. Sure, Noelle’s anger towards the situation shows…but the idea of “copying their keys” so they stay is very tongue-in-cheek. It’s not something she’d actually do (we hope), but the voices…

It’s hard to ignore the devil on your shoulder in times of emotional hardship. “Copy Ur Keys” brings comfort to the wronged, overstating that even the best of us get stuck in a rut sometimes, but to the tune of frolicking through a field of flowers, with a hard electric guitar motivating you in each chorus.
