MY GRAVITY GIRLS’ ‘SILLY’ EP IS A DARING CREATIVE, ARTISTIC JOURNEY
If you want to fill an 80s synth wave-sized hole in your heart, look no further—My Gravity Girls is ecstatic to provide. The group is known to push the envelope, taking their creative journey seriously while allowing their wings to soar without reservations. Their newest effort, an EP titled ‘SILLY,’ was a risk worth taking. Great artists are marked by their willingness to create for themselves, hoping an audience will resonate with them. That is the kind of energy that you get listening to My Gravity Girls. This is their EP, and we are lucky to be able to enjoy it.
Each arrangement is uniquely intertwined; this is, sonically, an intentional body of work that caters to open-minded tastes. It has a vintage feeling, not only because it leans towards 80s synth wave but it is audibly an analog recording. The opening (and title) track, “SILLY,” is a great introduction to this zany, eclectic world. The vocal mix sits on top of everything else, though it is not distracting. Instead, it is expressive and emotive, evidently pointing towards an emphasis on the lyrics that are being performed.
This is an increasingly recurrent theme within the brief EP. Though it is only 13 minutes long, it covers a lot of thematic ground. “CROSSLINES” begins with a spoken-word poem, reinforcing the focus on the lyrics. Detailing love and loss, “CROSSLINES” utilizes multiple techniques to get the point across. However, the show's real star is the build that begins towards the middle of the song. The use of synthesizers in each of these mixes is truly impeccable.
“Nike” offers the audience a chance to cool down after the emotional whirlwind throughout the rest of the ep. Still, the lyrics are very emotive; the writing style of the work tends to veer towards pessimism, but it’s not overbearing, instead offering vulnerable moments to share from real-life experiences. I’m very intrigued by the song's vocal mixing. Again, it noticeably sits on top of the mix, but the duplicate layers add to the metaphorical layers of emotion being portrayed.
Finally, “Loop” suggests that the cycle will repeat itself even after all is said and done. However, this is my favorite instrumentation for the whole episode. The arpeggiated synthesizer provides an airiness that contrasts with the heavyweight energy of the other songs. Fascinating use of vocal layers is attempted again, but this time, it seems to insinuate that multiple people are feeling the same way intentionally. Though it often feels isolating when you’re going through difficult periods, we are all human! “Loop” is the strongest performance in the 13-minute EP in every category.
My Gravity Girls is packed full of potential. Their creative use of complicated production techniques, paired with a dedication to vulnerable lyricism, can put them in front of an incredibly diverse audience, which is necessary to succeed in modern music.
