MY FRIEND NOEL’S DEBUT EARWORM “WAKE UP KID!” IS A DELIGHT

The New York underground indie scene is known for providing hidden gems that eventually become scene staples, and it seems like My Friend Noel is on their way to becoming indie pop/rock royalty. Their debut single, “Wake Up Kid!” is fresh, as it is refreshing.

There seems to be a trend within indie music towards live-sounding recordings. Of course, the magic of modern technology allows artists to create this ambiance even if they record stems separately. However, this resurgence of live-sounding recordings directly reflects being spoon-fed heavily produced music for the past few decades. Both approaches have pros and cons, but My Friend Noel is filling a void that many appear to be craving at the moment.

The song is guided by one of the catchiest guitar riffs and hardest lead solos I’ve heard in a minute. Plus, the audible bass line carries the melody perfectly, allowing vocal stylings to be bold without being overbearing.

It’s a fantastic time to be a woman in pop-rock. Artists can focus on catchy hooks and punchy drums while still showcasing their artistic authenticity—and My Friend Noel is off to an incredible start!
