MOTION CITY SOUNDTRACK CONTINUES ALBUM ROLLOUT WITH EPIC NEW SINGLE “YOU KNOW WHO THE FUCK WE ARE”
Whoa—I got to drop an f-bomb in a headline. That’s crazy. You know what’s crazier? Motion City Soundtrack is BACK. They’ve been teasing their tongue-twister record, The Same Old Wasted Wonderful World, along with a co-headliner with Say Anything (gasp). Now, their single, “You Know Who The Fuck We Are,” continues where Panic Stations left off.
This is a deeply controversial MCS opinion. I think Panic Stations fucking slaps. I also think that, because the new single contains an f-bomb, I can include it in this review as well. Anyway, the single mirrors the band’s former record by balancing Justin Pierre’s signature flowery lyric style with a more evolved signature soundscape.
A lead Moog synthesizer (and, by proxy, Moog Stands™) sits comfortably at the forefront. Justin experimented with this sound in his solo work, and before that, a group called Farewell Continental. Over time, it became his signature. It fits his work like a glove; I believe that the lead synth allows him to process each thought within his singles. “You Know Who The Fuck We Are” is far more confident than his usual writing. However, it still follows his stream-of-consciousness pattern. Thank god.
Sometimes, bands capture every human emotion that could possibly be felt. Motion City Soundtrack fits into that category; their discography has followed me throughout many “eras,” evolving along with me over time. Their irreverance, quirks, and most of all, humanity, have made it a no-brainer to continue supporting them.
“You Know Who The Fuck We Are” is a fantastic single.
