MARCANE’S NEW SINGLE “DESPITE THE SHARPEST KNIVES” REFUSES TO FIT IN A BOX
Marcane recently dropped “Despite the Sharpest Knives," a dynamic metal single that takes genre-bending soundscapes and amplifies them with lyrics about the complexity of humanity. The whiplash you get when listening to the track is intense, from the trap-like beats that appear at the beginning of the song to the powerful guitar breakdown throughout. It is hard to pinpoint just one umbrella that it fits into, as the song directs you around into multiple different sonic avenues.
No matter where you scrub in the song, there’s going to be a different vibe at each place that you land on.
Similar to the likes of Bring Me The Horizon, Marcane pairs experimental sounds with a more traditional metal aura. The slower parts are reminiscent of Deftones, capturing that same dark and intense energy that the band is known for. Some of that Bad Omens influence peaks its head out, with breathy vocals and a melody that guides you along like a storybook. If I were to compare Marcane with a more rap-based artist, Ghostemane would be my pick.
The lyricism expressed in this song is phenomenal, especially when conveyed by such a haunting voice. Vocal effects used towards the end give the song a whole new level, with an echoing, videogame-like effect that really adds to its charm.
Overall, “Despite the Sharpest Knives” is an avant-garde metalcore song that showcases Marcane’s diverse skill set in crafting epic pieces. Stay on the lookout for his EP, which is anticipated to be released later this year.
