MALLOW HILL’S CONFESSIONAL BLUESY INDIE ROCK TRACK “SMOKE” HITS ALL THE RIGHT NOTES

Songwriting matters, and Mallow Hill seems to be part of a comeback of the craft. This Baltimore, MD-based band is not content with resting on their laurels by just posturing and trying to relax and chill. Thus coasting on musical effects to cover up for a lack of original, organic, natural talent. There is no reading between the lines here. A solid lyric is as evident as a knock on the head. You don’t have to listen to their latest effort, “Smoke,” several times to convince yourself this song is passable, just decent, but it’s perfect. The listener cares about singer Mikayla Joseph’s story/journey about “what it’s like to deal with someone you love, struggle with addiction and substance abuse, and how it presents itself in relationships.” Something compelling and honest in her story may resonate with many people going through something similar in their own lives. Mikayla Joseph has a moving, dynamic vocal style full of raw emotion and conviction. Tying the lyrics, music, and arrangements together is the nucleus of Mallow Hill, featuring Danny Gwinn (guitar), Mac Dignam (keys), John Menefee (drums), and Chris Reynolds (bass, harmonica, vocals). The band is a tight unit that utilizes scintillating and percolating rhythms to keep things exciting, and the memorable melodies are strong and soar. They draw their musical inspiration from Gary Clark Jr, The Black Pumas, Marcus King Band, Led Zeppelin, and The Black Keys. Mallow Hill has a delicious taste. If “Smoke” indicates the quality of a standout song, then one can expect more suitable material to come and enjoy when the group’s debut album, Soul Candy” will be released later this year.
