LOS ANGELES POP-ROCK DUO HONEY REVENGE RETURN WITH A SONIC ADRENALINE RUSH, “RISK”

Dynamic duos have taken over the alt-rock space in the best way possible, with acts like Twenty One Pilots and Diva Bleach making huge waves with just two powerhouse musicians in their permanent lineup. LA’s Honey Revenge is no exception to this phenomenon; emerging from the depths of the DIY scene, the pair has cultivated an unmistakable signature sound. Their new song “Risk” is a sonic adrenaline rush, solidifying their place in the spotlight.

Vocalist Devin Papadol and guitarist Donny Lloyd share an undeniable chemistry that results in dynamic performances, whether on stage or in the studio. The two have masterfully interwoven their strengths, becoming true musical soulmates. Of course, guitar-focused pop-rock is always the move, but without either artist’s perspective and creative drive, the world would not have bangers like “Risk.” They need each other to succeed.

And succeed they do! In a few short years, the two have amassed a legion of fans who resonate with their music. Songs like “Risk” say what others are feeling, especially if they are not bold enough to say it themselves. Papadol never holds back lyrically; she has firmly established her take on confessional lyricism. It’s clear we grew up listening to the same playlists, with penmanship by Pete Wentz and Hayley Williams overtaking our teens. However, her voice is not merely an extension of theirs, but true admiration taken from years of observation. It’s beautiful to watch as inspiration takes flight and transforms into something entirely new.

I think it’s a drastic leap from “Airhead,” which showcased a completely contrasting message, to “Risk.” Now, Papadol and Lloyd stare fear in the face, befriending it instead of running away from it. Sure, they still overthink, but they don’t let “analysis paralysis” get in their way. Socially anxious extroverts everywhere (hi) cheered.

Honey Revenge knew what they were getting into during the writing process for “Risk.” It’s a notable shift from their breakout record, Retrovision, which effectively broke them out of our little DIY bubble and into mainstream consciousness. The glitchy, 80s-leaning synth work is magnificent, emphasizing the momentum that comes with adrenaline. And, of course, Lloyd’s gliding guitar solos are always the cherry on top of a Honey Revenge track, in all of their glittering, pink glory.

If this is any indicator of what HR2 will sound like, we are all in for such a sweet treat.

Directed by the ever-talented Sam Link, the new Honey Revenge music video elevates the band’s infectious sound with a slick, high-energy visual that perfectly captures their bold, pop-punk aesthetic. Watch it below:
