LIA KURI’S SPARKLY NEW SINGLE “CHAGRIN” IS BOTH CATCHY AND EXISTENTIAL
Indietronica is often misunderstood; artists like Lia Kuri add depth by exploring possible concepts and ideas within their lyricism. Her new song “Chagrin” has a grooving beat, but when you listen more closely, it’s far more profound than one might guess upon first listening.
Described as a “satire on (her) self-awareness,” Kuri’s “Chagrin” challenges us to think outside of daily realities, understanding the grander, scarier scheme of the universe we were born into. However, other than scaring me, the song provides comfort. I had been grappling with similar struggles as Kuri, dealing with one’s mortality, but knowing all humans face these thoughts at some point is calming to the soul. I’ll probably reach for these songs when the panic begins to brew.
Modern society often encourages us to focus on the wrong things; “Chagrin,” however, says there’s so much more to life than capitalistic demands or societal expectations. Sonically, the sweetly moving synthesizers and crisp lead vocals allow each word to be heard clearly.
The song is perfect for Owl City fans who have grown up a little. It scratches that itch in the brain while focusing on more adult topics, like life.
