KIT MAJOR’S ‘LOVE.SICK.MAJOR’ EP IS A CULMINATION OF UNBRIDLED CREATIVITY
The evolution of rock music has appeared in the form of artists like Kit Major, who offer unique sounds with hints of familiarity to entice diverse audiences. Her ‘Love.Sick.Major’ EP tastefully combines aspects of punk, indie, and grunge to establish a world entirely of her creation. Each nod is recognizable, but Kit Major’s real magic is her irreplaceable presence. She has established a persona that shines through each song, feeling each word she’s written in her soul. This directly translates to the recordings, which have as much oomph as the energy of a live performance. Sometimes, these nuances get lost in the studio; however, Kit Major has managed to evoke the same phenomenon as the feeling of spectating a live show. It’s reminiscent of the contagious vibes offered by 90s acts like Hole. Say what you will about Courtney Love, but she was born to be a performer, especially of this variety. Kit Major is extraordinarily similar in this way—though I doubt her reputation will become nearly as contentious.
“Fade Away” is a post-modern solid start. This track heavily showcases Major’s vocal ability, adding layers of harmonies that would impress seasoned professionals. Still, a hint of grit rounds out, introducing new fans to Major’s world. There was a brief period for all of us 20-somethings where all the music on Disney Channel sounded like it should be played at Vans Warped Tour. As a result, many are flocking to the comfort of a distorted guitar with a catchy chorus. Seriously, go back and listen to Hannah Montana’s discography and tell me there is not a fine line between her and Avril Lavigne. It would be more shocking if my peers were not making songs like “Fade Away.”
‘Love.Sick.Major’ is built like a delicious sandwich. Think of the most memorable sandwich you’ve ever had, something of Scooby Doo cartoon food glory. The bread at the beginning and end is fantastic, enough to write home about so you daydream misty visions of your Sammy for years to come. However, the real good stuff is right in the middle. The sandwich toppings—whether you are vegetarian or otherwise—outshine the slices, keeping them together. This would be akin to Earl of Sandwich’s Holiday Turkey. It’s nostalgic and well-put together, and I want to keep returning to it as frequently as possible. Other people might have their favorite sandwich, but the middle parts of Holiday Turkey are so satisfying for me, specifically.
“Sponge” is a strong lead single, but its follow-up, “In A Polite Way,” is truly spectacular. The song's composition scratches an itch in my brain that I didn’t know I had. Lyrically simplistic, the message is resonant to most…especially these days. It features a nice 2000s vibe that’s not overdone to match Y2K virality. I’m a significant fan of artistically-integrated autotune, and this song does it soooooo well. It’s giving Cobra Starship, especially ‘Viva La Cobra’ vibes…which is the highest compliment imaginable for anyone who knows me. The general public might overlook songs like “In A Polite Way” thanks to the repeated motif. Similarly, “Guilty Pleasure” is hailed by many but overlooked by most in Cobra Starship terms. Still, they’re considered a legacy act; Kit Major is directly comparable.
Finally, “Garbage Planet” rounds everything out, a grungy aur revoir for listeners. This revisits the Hole-esque dynamic with a bit more melodic value. Kit Major’s vocal range is something to behold; sometimes, she’s holding back to fit within these genres. Don’t get me wrong, her songs are well-composed and very catchy. However, hearing a solid belt from her would be highly satisfying. Or, perhaps some rich screams if that’s more her vibe. Hopefully, the perfectly-timed guitar solo at the bridge is convincing enough for Major to experiment more.
I’m so glad the universe brought me and Kit Major together as peers. We go together like peanut butter & jelly, complementing and contrasting quite well. ‘Love.Sick.Major’ indicates hard work, study, and perseverance. Her dedication to self-expression and creative convictions will get her far in this career path. I’m honored to have been here from the start.
