Kevin Drew of Broken Social Science Scene performed an hour-long set at the Masonic Lodge located in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Friday, January 26 in which he dedicated his tour and the night to his late mother Maggie.

The short tour which started less than two weeks before made its last stop at the famed Hollywood landmark that night. I didn’t know what to expect going in. I knew this was not going to be the typical music venue that I’d been used to going to so far. The seating and lighting arrangement was like a church service. Kevin Drew partnered with Daniel Ledwell and went up at the 9 o’clock hour in an acoustic set with a couple of numbers behind the piano.

The entire show was a very intimate performance so I had to be very careful with how I worked it out and not distract the audience and the performers. I spent the first 20 minutes at the front row of chairs and I got my favorite shot of the evening which was an up-close side shot of Kevin behind the Piano. Halfway in the night, they welcomed special guest Henry Wolfe with the harmonica in hand to perform “Out in the Fields” dedicated to Maggie.

Because this was primarily an acoustic set I tried not to be repetitive and use the environment in creative ways in a couple of shots including one wide shot of Kevin on Piano in front of the back wall and another with Daniel on the right side with his shadow on the back wall on the left.

They closed out the night with the song “Superconnected” but before he performed his finale he asked everyone all at once to shout out the name of who they lost in the last year and said “Love matters, anger is everywhere and we all gotta go out there and help each other out”.
