Gothic subculture has multiple moving parts that often go overlooked, but Kat Robichaud has managed to touch previously uncharted territory in her new single “Vampire Love.” She has positioned herself perfectly in modern music, while simultaneously paying homage to those who came before her. The single is equally new-wave and poppy, channeling David Bowie and New Order all at once.

People often have a very rigid idea of what goth is, ironic as that may sound. Robichaud’s take reminds audiences that goth had many different influences, leaving room for today’s artists to curate their own version of what came before them.

Sonically, the single has just the right amount of catchy elements to keep it memorable without being overbearing. There’s a clear chorus that got stuck in my head after the first listen, but it likely won’t face the future fate of ending up on the Kohl’s playlist.

The song features an accompanying music video that I feel is pivotal for its story. Robichaud took over the iconic Madonna Inn, capturing all its charm via a DIY project, covered in vampire blood. This comes just in time for Halloween—but for some of us, Halloween is every day.

Thematically, metaphorically placing “Vampire Love” at the forefront of the lyrics perfectly encapsulates the idea of “forever” and all its nuances. Everyone craves an eternal “Vampire Love,” but there are always consequences to our actions and desires! Robichaud’s signature style and sultry vocal range belongs on massive stages worldwide. She is quite literally killing it!
