GOLDCRY REIMAGINES DEFTONES’ “CHANGE (IN THE HOUSE OF FLIES)” WITH A FRESH BITE

I’ve had an unusual relationship with cover songs over the years. Growing up, I enjoyed covers as a way to learn about other artists (think Smashing Pumpkins covering Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide”). Then I started to become resentful of bands that got fat off of covers early in their careers (think Save Ferris, Alien Ant Farm, and Orgy). But nowadays I’ve lightened up and appreciate a good cover when I hear it.

And that’s what I did when I heard GoldCry cover Deftones’ “Change (In the House of Flies)”. To me, the best covers are the ones that are done in the covering bands’ style. What’s the point if the cover sounds a lot like the original? That’s what GoldCry did on their take of “Change,” they took the original and made it their own. The original version is pretty perfect, but I liked that GoldCry made their rendition more haunting and shoegaze-y. Their interpretation of “Change” preserves the song's spirit while allowing you to absorb it from a different perspective.

It is also very much appreciated that GoldCry’s version is about a couple of minutes shorter than the original. Although the original is not too long, GoldCry was able to present a shorter version of “Change” without losing any of its meaning. Like I always say, keep it tight and keep it efficient.

Overall, I enjoyed GoldCry’s version of “Change.” Not as good as the original, but good enough to make you appreciate the Deftones even more. And the vibes it’s giving are spooky and eerie. If I’m a filmmaker, I say go ahead and throw this version in my psychological thriller and play it during an intense scene.

I’m a Deftones fan and I approve this cover.
