Necromantic black-doom conjurers WORM have unveiled their new single “Blackheart,” a chilling descent deeper into the vaults of the band’s expanding Necropalace universe. Serving as Part II of their ongoing short-film series, “Blackheart” widens the scope of WORM’s mythos while sharpening the cinematic and emotional edges of their sound.
Within the Necropalace lore, “Blackheart” guides viewers into the crypts and catacombs beneath the ancient castle, where the vampire lord Nightfang rests. Beside his black coffin lies the artifact known as the Blackheart—encased in ice, glowing blood-red, and pulsing with the energy that keeps the palace walls and their immortal inhabitant alive. It’s a vivid piece of world-building that aligns perfectly with the track’s ominous atmosphere.
The video reunites WORM with the creative team behind the first film installment. Director Norman Cabrera (Danzig, The Walking Dead, Fright Night II), producer Maya Kay, colorist Alex Nicolaou of Drab Majesty, and direction from horror veteran Ted Nicolaou (TerrorVision, Subspecies) once again translate WORM’s influences—’80s and ’90s horror, gothic fantasy, and occult iconography—into a lush, visually striking short film. “Blackheart” feels like a lost sequence from a cult vampire classic, dusted off and restored in high definition.
Musically, the track shows a different shade of WORM. Vocalist Phantom Slaughter elaborates:
“We consider this to be a gothic vampire love ballad. Sharing a different kind of emotion and color than the rest of the record. The lyrics touch on the isolation and loss one feels as a child of the night. Musically, ‘Blackheart’ fuses Avant-garde music era Katatonia and their love of Fields Of The Nephilim with icy AOR like FM (UK), Strangeways, and Harem Scarem. We could not leave behind our Floridian heritage so there are also frozen swamp nods to Death’s Symbolic as well as Crimson Glory.”
Those reference points come through clearly. The song sweeps between mournful melody lines, grinding doom passages, gothic keys, and black-metal frost. Phantom Slaughter’s performance feels poised between longing and damnation, making “Blackheart” one of the most emotionally charged tracks in WORM’s catalog.
As a single, “Blackheart” stands firmly on its own. As part of the Necropalace narrative, it expands the lore. It deepens the tone of the world WORM are creating—one that feels increasingly like a fully realized fantasy universe rather than just an aesthetic backdrop.
