GET POSSESSED BY SPOOKY SHORT "THE HOUSE CALL" FOR HALLOWEEN
A young female doctor, who has recently lost her sister, is called by her mentor to do a favor and see a patient that claims to be possessed by the devil. What the doctor discovers shakes her beliefs to their very core.
The center of THE HOUSE CALL is a very engaging meditation on belief. The age-old battle of science and religion is examined in an engrossing cat-and-mouse conversation between the young resident and the entity in the house. Julie Paige and Nick Thurston provide perfect foils for each other, Paige playing the clinical scientist to perfection and Thurston playing the passionate son of the mother.
Director David Schuler is able to approach a horror genre mainstay, the possession film, from a fresh perspective. He does not fall into any of the traps that have become so common in favor of a more psychological focus. There are no spinning heads or pea soup projections. This low-key approach really gets under your skin. And ultimately you are left with the question, did anything I have just seen actually happen?
Schuler works in homages to classic horror films like “The Exorcist” with shots like the doctor outside of the house. The score is a perfect synthesis of creepy arpeggios that is reminiscent of both Phantasm and The Exorcist without being a direct crib of either. David Schuler is a member of the synthwave band The Bad Dreamers.
