GET POSSESSED BY SPOOKY SHORT "THE HOUSE CALL" FOR HALLOWEEN

The House Call - Image 2.png

A young female doctor, who has recently lost her sister, is called by her mentor to do a favor and see a patient that claims to be possessed by the devil. What the doctor discovers shakes her beliefs to their very core.

The center of THE HOUSE CALL is a very engaging meditation on belief. The age-old battle of science and religion is examined in an engrossing cat-and-mouse conversation between the young resident and the entity in the house. Julie Paige and Nick Thurston provide perfect foils for each other, Paige playing the clinical scientist to perfection and Thurston playing the passionate son of the mother.

Director David Schuler is able to approach a horror genre mainstay, the possession film, from a fresh perspective. He does not fall into any of the traps that have become so common in favor of a more psychological focus. There are no spinning heads or pea soup projections. This low-key approach really gets under your skin. And ultimately you are left with the question, did anything I have just seen actually happen?

Schuler works in homages to classic horror films like “The Exorcist” with shots like the doctor outside of the house. The score is a perfect synthesis of creepy arpeggios that is reminiscent of both Phantasm and The Exorcist without being a direct crib of either. David Schuler is a member of the synthwave band The Bad Dreamers.

Watch THE HOUSE CALL below, and prepare to be unnerved:

We meet Dr. Stevens, a psychiatrist, on her first day back to work since burying her sister. Tasked with paying a visit to a radically religious family who believe their Mother is possessed, hospitality turns to contempt when the family discovers Dr. Stevens is an atheist. - CREATIVE MISSION: This film seeks to explore the dangers of keeping ourselves overly distracted while suffering traumatic events or losses. Furthermore, it explores the contrasting conclusions drawn on 'possession' as diagnosed by religion versus psychiatry. https://bit.ly/2Hpvq2t - FESTIVAL AWARDS Best Short Horror Film - IndieX Fest (2019) Best Horror Short - Los Angeles Horror Film Competition (2019) Best Short Horror Film - Indie Short Fest (2019) Best Horror Short (People’s Choice) - HRIFF (2020) Best Short Film - Pasadena Horror Film Festival (2020) Best Short Horror Film - Los Angeles Cinefest (2020) Best Short Film - Frightfilm Festival (2020) Best Leading Actress - Frightfilm Festival (2020) Best Supporting Actor - Frightfilm Festival (2020) Best Original Score - Frightfilm Festival (2020) Best Special FX Makeup - Indie Short Fest (2019) FESTIVAL SELECTIONS 2020 Atlanta Horror Film Festival 2020 Tucson Terror Fest 2020 Sacramento Horror Film Festival 2020 Horror Haus Film Festival - STARRING Julie Paige as Dr. Vanessa Stevens Nick Thurston as Adam Varda Appleton as The Mother Brandy Zapata as Natalie Stevens Anna Lillie as Beth Jackie Tohn as Dr. Michaels Ricky Mabe as Dr. Kenneg Nicole Fong as Mariana ________ Edit, Original Music, Written and Directed by David Schuler Executive Producers: David Schuler, Julie Paige Story by David Schuler and Julie Paige Produced by Barry Sonders Associate Producer: Tony Galante Director of Photography/Steadicam: Christian Evans Production Design: Whitney Vance Makeup/Special FX Makeup/Hair: Brittany Turpen Jen Pawlowski: Camera Assistant Gaffer: Luca Pascalicchio Grip: Graham Wade Sound Mixer: Aamir Edwards Sound Design: Steve Bucino and David Schuler Re-Recording Mixer/Supervising Sound Editor: Steve Bucino VFX / Jib Operator: Andrew Dole Colorist / Additional VFX: Daniel Straub Production Assistant: Atticus Kiser Production Assistant: Jaclyn Huff ________ A Shadow Puppets Entertainment / Thank You For Lunch Production ________ COPYRIGHT © MMXIX SHADOW PUPPETS ENTERTAINMENT ® ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
