DONEFOR THROW IT ALL IN THE MIX ON NEW SINGLE “OMENS”
Combining multiple genres into one sound can be tricky. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it sounds like a bunch of ideas fighting for space. Thankfully, DONEFOR know what the hell they’re doing on their newest single, “OMENS,” a love letter to the metal, emo, and pop-punk sounds that dominated the early 2000s.
The Florida five-piece describe their genre-hopping sound as “ADHD-core,” and honestly, that makes a lot of sense. “OMENS” rarely stays in one place for long, bouncing between cool riffs, passionate vocals, and a melody that immediately keeps you locked in. All five members contribute vocally, giving the song another layer of personality as it moves between its different influences.
Then there’s the chorus. It’s smooth, catchy, and makes you think you’ve figured out exactly where the song is headed. Nope. DONEFOR suddenly drops a nasty metalcore breakdown that completely flips the mood and makes you reconsider everything you thought “OMENS” was going to be.
On paper, there are enough different sounds here that this probably shouldn’t work as well as it does. But DONEFOR has the chemistry to hold everything together without any one influence feeling awkwardly shoved into the song. For a band still relatively new to the scene, they already sound incredibly comfortable playing off one another.
“OMENS” feels like A Day To Remember and New Found Glory somehow had a song baby and raised it on early-2000s metalcore. It’s heavy when you want something heavy, catchy when you want something catchy, and perfect for those days when you have absolutely no idea what the hell you feel like listening to.
