CURSIVE DESTROYS THE REGENT THEATRE IN LOS ANGELES WITH A POWERFUL, EMOTIONAL SET
Cursive's performance at the Regent was a special one, debuting their new album Devourer. Performing new songs but in the same tune as some of their older albums, it was refreshing to hear less familiar songs with the same enthusiasm as they usually bring to their live shows.
Starting off the show was the indie rock band Pile from Boston, Massachusetts. Having listened to their songs before but never having the chance to see them live, the set confirmed their ability to jam out and put on a properly heavy show. Guitarist Rick Maguire led the show with his daring vocals, while bassist Alex Molini and drummer Kris Kuss followed along with such daring energy to capture the crowd.
After opening the show, Cursive took the stage with an animated backdrop of their newest album cover. They started their performance with hits off Devourer, then slowly picked up with fan favorites like The Recluse, A Gentleman Caller, and a few other songs from their 2006 album Happy Hollow.
My favorite addition to Cursive's past recent shows as well as this one, is the more than talented Megan Siebe on the cello. Her ability to move and sway while perfecting the sounds of the band is always a sight to witness. Bringing the sounds of The Ugly Organ back to life proves that the more-than-20-year-old album never diminishes in power.
I left the show wanting to hear even more, demonstrating the power Cursive and their songs have on the indie rock scene. A show worth waiting for.
I'm curious how and what songs the band will perform in a few months’ time, as they prepare to join Bright Eyes on the road in April.
