BRENNA PUSHES HER SOUND FORWARD ON “THE OTHER SIDE”
On “The Other Side,” musician and songwriter BRENNA uses both her natural instincts and lived experiences to take another leap forward, expanding her already inventive sound without losing what makes it distinctly hers.
The second single from her upcoming album is a roughly four-minute journey built around the fear of dying before you’ve really had the chance to live, a feeling that’s probably crossed most of our minds at one point or another.
“The Other Side” opens with a beautiful guitar riff, accompanied by piano, before gradually building toward a bridge and a catchy, passionate chorus. Just when you think you have the song figured out, BRENNA takes a sharp left turn. The final stretch heads off on an electronic side quest, transforming into a sample-filled outro that, somehow, doesn’t feel out of place.
In fact, that unexpected ending is what keeps “The Other Side” from becoming too formulaic. It’s a testament to BRENNA’s ability to experiment without losing the listener, creating music that can be different yet easy to digest.
At its core, “The Other Side” is a solid rock song sandwiched between a delicate piano-driven opening and an electronic outro. Those contrasting pieces shouldn’t necessarily work together, but BRENNA makes them feel like parts of the same journey.
BRENNA is past the point of finding her voice. Now, she’s figuring out just how big that voice can become. Not necessarily louder in volume, but louder in scope, ambition, and emotional weight.
BRENNA didn’t want to write “The Other Side.” She needed to. And you can hear that urgency in every part of it.
