BRENDAN ANGELIDES REIMAGINES DAVID BOWIE'S "I'M AFRAID OF AMERICANS"
Brendan Angelides puts a contemporary spin on David Bowie's 1997 classic "I'm Afraid of Americans," recruiting System of a Down's Serj Tankian and Eliza Bragg of Roomful of Teeth for a reinterpretation that feels both ambitious and respectful. Woven throughout the track are the voices of Angelides' six-year-old twins, adding an eerie, almost dreamlike layer to an already unsettling arrangement.
The accompanying video leans heavily into surrealism with a distinctly Max Headroom-inspired aesthetic. Whether the child featured is Angelides himself is unclear, but the visual complements the song's detached, dystopian atmosphere.
Musically, Angelides updates the track with modern production while preserving the industrial pulse that made Bowie's original so memorable. The electronic textures remain, though they feel denser, more compressed, and at times intentionally off-kilter. It's less about reinventing the song and more about reframing it through a 2026 lens.
Originally written by David Bowie and Brian Eno, "I'm Afraid of Americans" wasn't a condemnation of individual Americans, but rather a critique of the growing influence of homogenized American consumerism and corporate culture on the rest of the world. That message remains just as relevant today, giving Angelides' version added weight beyond simply revisiting a classic.
Of course, comparisons to the original are inevitable. Bowie's version, particularly when paired with Trent Reznor's iconic remixes and unforgettable music video, remains the definitive take. The paranoia, urgency, and industrial edge of that era are difficult to replicate, and Angelides wisely doesn't try to outdo it.
Instead, he offers a thoughtful homage that introduces the song to a new audience while giving longtime fans another perspective on a timeless piece of social commentary. It may not replace the original, nor does it need to, but it's a compelling reinterpretation that's well worth a listen.
