BASEMENT RELEASE NEW SINGLE “HEAD ALIGHT”

UK alt-rock staples Basement are back with a new single, “Head Alight,” the latest preview of their upcoming album Wired, out May 8 via Run For Cover Records. The record marks their first full-length in over eight years, and this track gives a clear sense of where they’re at now.

“Head Alight” feels like Basement picking up right where they left off, just a little tighter and more dialed in. It leans into what they’ve always done well: warm, slightly hazy guitars, a steady rhythm, and that low-key emotional pull that creeps up on you instead of hitting all at once.

The song doesn’t rush. It builds naturally, letting things breathe before opening up. The guitars drift in and out without trying to dominate, and the rhythm section keeps everything grounded without overcomplicating it. It’s simple, but in a way that works.

Andrew Fisher keeps his delivery restrained, almost conversational at times, which fits the tone. There’s emotion there, but it never spills over. That balance has always been a big part of what makes Basement land the way they do.

Lyrically, it sits in that familiar space of uncertainty, trying to figure things out without a clear answer. It’s not overly specific, but it doesn’t need to be.

“I never thought Basement could sound like this,” says guitarist Alex Henery. “But in my head, it’s what I’ve always wanted Basement to sound like.” That line makes sense here. There’s something slightly expanded about “Head Alight,” even if it’s subtle.

Every time Basement steps away, they seem to come back bigger. Their 2011 debut, I Wish You Could Stay Here, helped plant them in the early 2010s post-hardcore wave, but they had already decided to call it quits before the more refined Colourmeinkindness even dropped. When they disbanded in 2012 so Fisher could focus on getting his teaching degree, their following only grew. By the time they returned in 2014, they weren’t just another band from that era; they were one people stuck with.
