AVERY LAIRD DROPS KILLER ALT-ROCK JAM “HAIRPIN”
Canadian alt-rock upstart Avery Laird just dropped a full-blown breakup anthem with “Hairpin.” It’s the kind of track that lets you sit in the wreckage a bit, but still has enough punch to keep you moving. Equal parts heavy and reflective, it leans into that push and pull of heartbreak without overdoing it.
“Hairpin” runs on big power chords and that classic soft-to-loud dynamic, tapping into a very real 90s grunge and college rock feel without sounding like a copy. Laird’s vocals carry a frustrated edge that makes the whole thing easy to latch onto, the kind you catch yourself singing along to without realizing it.
There’s a lot packed into its short runtime. Fuzzy guitar leads cut through thick bass lines, the drums hit hard without getting messy, and the cymbals wash over everything in a way that fills the space just right. It feels raw, but controlled.
It’s easy to picture this living on something like 120 Minutes back in the day. Now it feels just as ready for playlists and repeat listens. “Hairpin” is short, direct, and hits exactly where it needs to.
