ALY & AJ EMBRACE THE INEVITABILITY OF CHANGE IN THEIR NEW SONG “WHAT IT FEELS LIKE”

You likely know powerhouse sister duo Aly & AJ from their Disney days. “Potential Breakup Song” and the severely underrated Disney Channel Original Film Cow Belles. Now, however, the two are exploring different stages of life gracefully. Their new single, “What It Feels Like,” offers a fresh perspective, grounding the idea of growing up versus rejecting it.

Sexism runs rampant, not only in the music industry but also within society. Women experience it daily; getting older is almost seen as taboo despite it is inevitable—and even a gift, in ways. However, men experience it, too, by perpetuating these stereotypes. They don’t help anybody, so for Aly & AJ, saying, “That’s okay, I’m not afraid,” is a bold, necessary statement.

Though sonically very chill, the song is as punk-rock as it gets. Seriously, listen to these lyrics: “I’ve come too far; it’s too long a road just to trade my dreams for money.”

Following your happiness isn’t an expiration date unless you adhere to society’s restrictive ideology.

The record label that rejected Aly & AJ should be extremely disappointed in themselves. Not only are these starlets long-standing icons in the industry, shaping childhood memories for many (myself included), but by perpetuating outdated, ageist systems, they’re missing out on a gem in technical skill.

Outside of commentary, the track's instrumentation features some of the best bass playing I’ve ever heard.

Moreover, “What It Feels Like” proves that you can say a whole lot without screaming it from the rooftops. Sometimes, whispers are louder.
