“REACTION” BY SMOKEY BRIGHTS IS AN EPIC FOREST BALLAD
“Reaction” by Seattle’s Smokey Brights is sure to resonate with those trying to discover who they are. The band delivers an impassioned performance, with the vocals as the shining star of the track.
Overall, I think this song is definitely reminiscent of many pop ballads from the early 2010s. Beyond that, I could see this being a song listened to in an enchanted forest, which — amusingly enough — is precisely where the music video takes place—good old PNW vibes front and center.
Sonically, the guitar is punchy and adds to the epicness of the song, with hints of southern vibes in the vocals that I’m really liking.
The lyrics follow a tug between reliance and independence. I think one strong underlying theme is codependence, hence the indecision and yearning for a savior. “Just give me time, just give me heat,” puts me in the feels. It may feel like grabbing onto someone is necessary. Ultimately, only the individual can save themselves from their demons.
This self-doubt is really explored in the chorus, “I know you can’t save me, but can I get a reaction?” Pining for confirmation and reassurance in these moments really solidifies the struggle of reaching out to others for comfort.
All of these themes are powerfully conveyed by the lovely vocalist, who provides an authentic, raw energy to convey these charged feelings. It’s so easy to run away.
Overall, “Reaction” carves out a special place for itself as an emotionally charged melody and the final single released from their new album, Dashboard Heat.
